Principles of Manual Handling

Introduction

The Principles of Manual Handling is a half-day training course aimed at those who carry out manual handling activities in the workplace.

It is designed to introduce candidates to the risks involved in manual handling and the various controls available to them.

Course Prerequisites

There are no prerequisites for this course.

Course Contents & Format

The course is delivered using a variety of techniques, including demonstrations, video presentations, group activities. These activities are designed to suit the training needs of the candidates.

The course content is tailored to meet the needs of the candidates, however in general the topics covered will include the following as a minimum syllabus:-

  • The process of ‘Manual Handling’ in the workplace
  • ‘Manual Handling’ injuries and the workplace activities which cause them
  • The legal framework surrounding manual handling in the workplace
  • Risk Assessments and Control Measures
  • Safe Lifting Techniques

The course is delivered over three teaching hours, however can be delivered over a longer period, or broken into shorter sessions to meet the needs of the business.

Assessment

Students will be assessed by a multiple choice examination and by demonstrating safe lifting techniques.

Certification

Students who are successful in the examination will be awarded a Chartered Institute of Environmental Certificate which remains valid for a three year period. Those who are unsuccessful in the examination will be awarded a certificate of attendance by Premier First Aid Limited.
